Atlanta Gas Light employee honored for playing pivotal role in developing young minds in Savannah

Jamie Coursey receives inaugural Luminary Award in recognition of volunteering hundreds of hours with local teens in 2022

ATLANTA – July 18, 2023 – In recognition of his dedication to Savannah’s youth, Atlanta Gas Light Project Coordinator Jamie Coursey was presented with the first-ever Luminary Award, the company’s latest effort honoring employees who have become beacons of light in their communities.

Coursey is a 35-year employee of Atlanta Gas Light and works in the company’s Savannah office. In 2022, he invested more than 200 hours – about four hours a week – in the Savannah community by volunteering as a youth group leader at Islands Christian Church.

Over his seven years with the group, Coursey has modeled honesty and respect, fairness and integrity and compassion towards others for area teens. He has demonstrated the importance of contributing to one’s community in a variety of ways, including bringing the youth group to volunteer at America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia and helping them write letters to deployed U.S. service personnel. What began as one man’s desire to give back has been multiplied by the contributions of each of the lives he has touched.

“From teaching teens in his youth group to drive, to leading them in acts of service, Jamie has shown that helping others can be its own reward,” said Atlanta Gas Light Foundation Vice President Serena Levy. “It is clear from listening to the young men he leads that Jamie has had a lasting impact on their lives and the community at large. The Atlanta Gas Light Foundation wants to help extend Jamie’s reach even further by making a donation to the local charity of his choosing.”

For his efforts, the Atlanta Gas Light Foundation will donate $5,000 to America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. In 2022, the organization provided more than 19 million meals to food insecure families across Coastal Georgia.

“It is my goal to help these young men become the best students, sons, brothers, leaders and men that they can be,” said Coursey. “I am grateful to the Atlanta Gas Light Foundation for helping me show them just how rewarding it is to give back.”

Coursey’s involvement in the Savannah community is highlighted in this video.

“We are delighted that Jamie chose Second Harvest food bank as the local charity of his choice,” said America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia’s Executive Director Mary Jane Crouch. “This donation will provide up to 25,000 more meals for the communities we serve in Coastal Georgia. We are also so appreciative of Jamie’s passion for mentoring teens in his youth group and would like to commend his efforts for instilling volunteerism, philanthropy, and compassion in these young men.”

The Luminary Award was created in 2023 to recognize employees who volunteer their time to serve their local communities. Nominees for the Luminary Award are selected from across the Southern Company Gas system, which includes Atlanta Gas Light and Georgia Natural Gas in Georgia, Chattanooga Gas in Tennessee, Nicor Gas in Illinois and Virginia Natural Gas in Virginia. They are chosen based on their volunteer hours, philanthropic efforts and the way they exemplify the company’s values.
