Atlanta Philanthropist Bernie Marcus Honored As 2006 Shining Light by Atlanta Gas Light, WSB-Radio March 6, 2006
ATLANTA, Mar 06, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Bernie Marcus, the renowned philanthropist behind the Marcus Institute and the Georgia Aquarium, today received Georgia's most prestigious honor, the 2006 Shining Light Award, from Atlanta Gas Light and News/Talk 750 WSB.
Marcus, co-founder with Arthur Blank of The Home Depot, the Atlanta-based home improvement chain, unveiled the award, an old-time street light with an eternally burning natural gas flame, in front of almost 200 guests at a luncheon in his honor at the Georgia Aquarium, his $250 million "gift to Atlanta" that is revitalizing the city center. The lamppost will find a permanent home in front of the Marcus Institute, which he founded to help children suffering from catastrophic illnesses.
During the ceremony, AGL Resources (NYSE:ATG), the parent company of Atlanta Gas Light, surprised Marcus and his wife, Billi, with a $35,000 donation from the AGL Resources Private Foundation to support the early childhood intervention program at the Marcus Institute and the Georgia Aquarium's education program.
In its 42-year history, the Shining Light Award from Atlanta Gas Light and News/Talk 750 WSB (NYSE: CXR) has become one of Atlanta's most cherished traditions recognizing and honoring the city's outstanding leaders.
"Through his leadership and generosity, Bernie Marcus epitomizes the Shining Light Award, a bright beacon that symbolizes the spirit of Atlanta," said Suzanne Sitherwood, president of Atlanta Gas Light and senior vice president of AGL Resources Southern Operations. "Atlanta Gas Light, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, was founded in 1856 to light the streets of Atlanta, making the city a better place to live and work. Like the other outstanding recipients of the Shining Light, Bernie has been an integral contributor to Atlanta's continued growth and well-being."
Marcus joins an impressive listing of past honorees, including the late former Atlanta Mayor Maynard H. Jackson, former President Jimmy Carter, former Mayor and Ambassador Andrew Young, baseball legend Henry "Hank" Aaron and the 2005 recipient, Alana Shepherd.
"Bernie's passion for making Atlanta a truly great city is exemplified with his success in bringing the Georgia Aquarium to reality," said David P. Meszaros, vice president and general manager of News/Talk 750 WSB. "From the beginnings of The Home Depot to the Georgia Aquarium, Bernie dreams big and makes his dreams come true."
The Georgia Aquarium, home to more than 100,000 animals representing more than 500 species, is the largest aquarium in the world.
