Atlanta Philanthropist Bernie Marcus Honored As 2006 Shining Light by Atlanta Gas Light, WSB-Radio

ATLANTA, Mar 06, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Bernie Marcus, the renowned philanthropist behind the Marcus Institute and the Georgia Aquarium, today received Georgia's most prestigious honor, the 2006 Shining Light Award, from Atlanta Gas Light and News/Talk 750 WSB.

Marcus, co-founder with Arthur Blank of The Home Depot, the Atlanta-based home improvement chain, unveiled the award, an old-time street light with an eternally burning natural gas flame, in front of almost 200 guests at a luncheon in his honor at the Georgia Aquarium, his $250 million "gift to Atlanta" that is revitalizing the city center. The lamppost will find a permanent home in front of the Marcus Institute, which he founded to help children suffering from catastrophic illnesses.

During the ceremony, AGL Resources (NYSE:ATG), the parent company of Atlanta Gas Light, surprised Marcus and his wife, Billi, with a $35,000 donation from the AGL Resources Private Foundation to support the early childhood intervention program at the Marcus Institute and the Georgia Aquarium's education program.

In its 42-year history, the Shining Light Award from Atlanta Gas Light and News/Talk 750 WSB (NYSE: CXR) has become one of Atlanta's most cherished traditions recognizing and honoring the city's outstanding leaders.
