Rededication of The Shining Light Award at Clark Atlanta University

October 20, 2000

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - AGL Resources Vice President Operations, Mr. Isaac Blythers and President of Clark Atlanta University, Dr. Thomas Cole recently reinstalled the Shining Light Award and Plaque in honor of Dr. Rufus L. Clement, second president of the Atlanta University System. Dr. Clement was president of the university for 30 years.

The Shining Light Award was established in 1963 by WSB Radio and Atlanta Gas Light Company. Each year the award recognizes a Georgian who has been an inspiration to the lives of others through service to humanity. A gas lamp and plaque is installed in their honor at a site of their choice. Dr. Clement's gas lamp and Shining Light Award plaque was initially stalled at the Atlanta University campus in 1968. It was removed in 1991 for construction at the institution. The Shining Light Award Plaque was affixed to a gas lamp in a new location in front of Rufus L. Clement Hall.
